Kate CarpenterHi, "I am the Kindergarten General Studies teacher at the Silver Academy. I started teaching here in 1998 and taught First Grade for 7 years before switching to Kindergarten. I've taught children ages 4 through 18 for a total of 25 years, with a 12-year hiatus while I was a stay-at-home mom who taught international folk dancing on the side. I graduated from Sophia University in Tokyo with a B.A. in Education and Political Science and did my graduate work in Philadelphia, earning a Master's degree in Education from Temple University in 1976.
My first job was as the Reading Specialist for the Delta School in Newtown, PA. From there I went to St. Francis Vocational School, a residential facility for boys in Cornwells Heights, Pa. I then taught for 5 years in the Upper School of a residential community mental health center in Norfolk, Va. In 1984 I married a fellow folk dancer named Bart, and we moved to Leiden in the Netherlands. Our son Bennett was born in 1985, in High Wycombe, England, and soon afterward we moved back to Harrisburg. (Interestingly, Bennett is now finishing up a Master's program at the University of Leiden!) When Bennett started preschool, I volunteered in his classes and became increasingly interested in the field of early childhood education. I subsequently took post-graduate courses at Millersville University and am currently certified as a Reading Specialist and as an Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education teacher. kcarpenter@silveracademypa.org |
