Mathematics
A challenging approach to everyday problem solving is the focus of the mathematics program. Topics explored and refined are numeration, patterns, measurement, place value, decimals, geometry and attributes, Pre-Algebra and Algebra I, “mental math,” money values, graphing and fractions. In the lower grades, students learn the foundation of mathematics using a variety of manipulatives, such as scales, thermometers, pattern blocks, metric weights, dominoes, clocks, rulers, dice and flashcards. This hands-on approach helps to make meaning out of math. In middle grades, the program emphasizes mastery emphasizes mastery of the basic operations of addition, subtraction and multiplication of whole numbers, money, graphing, place value and time, geometry, fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, and an introduction to percent and probability, Pre-algebra and Algebra I. In upper grades, the curriculum stresses problem solving, estimation and their application to everyday mathematical challenges. Students learn algebra, and understand the stock market by creating and following their own stock portfolio. The curriculum stresses problem solving, estimation and their application to math in everyday life. The Investigations Series, which is designed to enhance problem solving and critical thinking skills, is utilized to provide enrichment.
